Setter/Hitter Communication & Volleyball Signals

Communication between setters and hitters is one of the most important aspects of running an offense. Using silent communication is one of the best ways to convey to hitters where they are going to hit. If you are a hitter, make sure you look at your setter before each play. Plays might change from point-to-point, so keep making sure you know what you are running. Additionally, know that if there is a bad pass, a trick play needs to turn to an audible and you need to call something easier to set, especially if the pass is far behind the 10 ft. line.

Setters need to make sure that their hitters always check with them in between plays. Calling their name might sometimes be necessary to get their attention, especially in the case of a change in call. It is a setter’s responsibility to make sure that their hitters do not collide and are aware of the play being run.
